AI /Fire is an Applied Innovation project, aimed at experimenting an Early Warning methodology in 3 real life cases, creating an integrated platform for Wildfire sensing that is able to collect and process in real-time data from environmental sensors and surveillance devices, in order to monitor and fight forest fires through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning algorithms.

The innovative AI /Fire concept is based on:

  1. an interoperable IoT platform realized entirely through multilevel Cloud, which allows to collect data in real-time (data in motion) and store them (data at rest);
  2. IoT sensors and surveillance devices for collecting on-site data;
  3. professional drones for monitoring and surveilling high-risk areas;
  4. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning algorithms for real-time data analysis and the formulation of fire risk hypotheses that are geolocalized.

AI /Fire has three main objectives:

1. CREATION OF AN INTEGRATED PLATFORM FOR WILDFIRE SENSING

The integrated platform for wildfire sensing will consist of the following hardware and software components:

  • Cloud-based IoT platform for collection, storage, processing and visualization of data;
  • Climate monitoring module, for real-time analysis of meteorological data;
  • Predictive Analytics Module, for real-time analysis of field data, combination with other data and historical data for predictive purposes;
  • Digital Twin module, for monitoring sensitive areas;
  • Smart App to involve citizens in the monitoring and emergency management phases.

2. EXPERIMENTATION OF EARLY WARNING METHODOLOGY

AI /Fire aims to test an Early Warning methodology based on increasing levels of criticality: through proactively monitoring environmental and climatic conditions, the system activates alerts, according to a criterion of progressive criticality defined by phases.

3. VALIDATION OF EARLY WARNING METHODOLOGY IN 3 REAL LIFE CASES

Ultimately, AI /Fire wants to test and validate the Early Warning methodology in 3 real life cases, defined from the needs expressed by the end users of the Living Lab project: the municipality of Bianchi, the municipality of Aprigliano and the municipality of Mormanno.

Partners who partecipated in the project

The AI /Fire consortium is composed by Extra Red srl in the role of Lead Partner, and Tea Engineering srl and CNR ISAC in the role of Partners.

Extra Red's role in the project

As lead partner, Extra Red will be in charge of the software infrastructure of the project and of the integration of climate monitoring sensors, fire predictive analysis and Digital Twin module.

In addition to the participation in the co-design activities of the functionalities, Extra Red will be responsible for the design and development of the front-end of the AI /Fire platform, consisting of a web application and a mobile application.

Skills aquired

Coordinating the project partnership and managing administrative responsibilities are only two of the skills acquired by Extra Red, in addition to:

  • Processing and management of geo-referenced data on geo-spatial databases;
  • Realization of Image Recognition modules for the identification of fire triggers or fumes;
  • Development of a platform for the acquisition and real time processing of data from meteorological and environmental sensors.
